There was considerable debate in the offseason as to whether or not the Dolphins were for real; obviously somebody believed in them, hence an early Monday Night Football date with the high-profile Colts. A decisive loss to the Falcons in Week 1 has curbed the enthusiasm of bettors and betting software, so this is a golden opportunity for the Dolphins to prove their worth against a very talented team.

NFL Week 2 betting odds: Colts -3

Miami wasn’t exactly dominated in its 19-7 loss in Atlanta, but there’s no denying the Dolphins were outplayed fairly handily. The game never felt within reach and the team didn’t score until about three minutes left in the fourth quarter. Chad Pennington’s dink-and-dunk attack did little to scare the Falcons and the offense gave the ball away four times. If this team is going to succeed it needs more help from the running game (96 yards on 22 carries).

The Dolphins’ defensive effort was solid considering the turnovers gave Atlanta’s offense great field position on a few different occasions. The unit failed to force a single turnover, though, and if that becomes a trend Miami is in deep trouble. On a positive note, Jason Taylor picked up a sack in his return to the team which drafted him.

The Colts ground out a tough 14-12 win over the Jaguars, and it’s always nice to see a “finesse” team like Indianapolis win a tough game. Jags quarterback David Garrard could get nothing going against the Indy defense, while allowed just 114 net passing yards. Although there was only one sack and no turnovers created, we’re betting management is pretty happy with the effort.

Peyton Manning was solid if unspectacular, surpassing 300 yards yet again while throwing the game-winning touchdown. Reggie Wayne was brilliant with 10 receptions for 162 yards and a score. There are some concerns, though. Starting receiver Anthony Gonzalez was lost to a knee injury, so look for more balls in Wayne’s and Dallas Clark’s direction. The running game also sputtered badly, with Joseph Addai and Donald Brown combining for 75 yards on 28 carries. Even with Manning at the helm, a one-dimensional offense could be trouble.

This is Miami’s chance to prove it’s for real—and it’s likely to fail. The Dolphins enjoyed an embarrassingly weak schedule last year during their surprising 11-win season. This year, they face a much more daunting gauntlet of teams. That includes Peyton Manning and the Colts, who have won 10 of their past 11 games—with the lone loss a playoff overtime defeat to the Chargers in which Indy lost the coin toss and never touched the ball. Miami’s exposure as a fraud continues on Monday night; make your NFL betting picks accordingly.

Pick: Indianapolis -3
