MLB Betting Weekend Preview: September 25-27

When you bet horses, it often pays to know which ones prefer to hang back in the pack and make a late charge when it matters. The teams featured in our MLB betting weekend preview are also coming on strong late in the year. Is there still time for them to make noise in the playoff races?

    Friday, September 25

    Red Sox @ Yankees – 7:05 p.m. ET

    Jon Lester (14-7, 3.33) vs Joba Chamberlain (8-6, 4.72)

Several months ago, Lester/Chamberlain would’ve been a marquee matchup, but now it looks more like a cakewalk for Boston as it drives for MLB playoff betting. Jon Lester has matured into a bona fide ace this year, rattling off nine straight quality starts. He brings it against the Yankees too, going unbeaten in three starts against them with a 2.70 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 20 innings. Boston should mop the floor with Joba Chamberlain, who’s only allowed to pitch three or four innings per start thanks to the absurd “Joba Rules.”

    Pick: Red Sox

    Cubs @ Giants – 10:15 p.m. ET

    Carlos Zambrano (8-6, 3.91) vs Tim Lincecum (14-6, 2.47)

Carlos Zambrano has faded badly in the second half, but he has a chance to lead Chicago to an upset Friday. He’s 6-2 on the road this season and 4-1 all-time against the Giants. Then again, the Cubs historically join Tim Lincecum’s long list of victims, having beaten him once in four tries. Since Lincecum is a bit off his game of late, however, I like Chicago to pull the minor shocker.

    Pick: Cubs

    Saturday, September 26

    Cardinals @ Rockies – 8:10 p.m. ET

Adam Wainwright (18-8, 2.59) vs Ubaldo Jimenez (3.47)

The Cards and Rockies meet in what could very well be a playoff preview this weekend. Adam Wainwright is pushing hard for the National League Cy Young Award, going 8-3 with a 1.93 ERA since the All-Star break. He also has a ridiculous 1.16 ERA all-time against Colorado. Jimenez is the real deal, but St. Louis gives him a bit of trouble; Colby Rasmus bats .500 off him and Yadier Molina hits .400. Pick the Cards in your betting management.

    Pick: Cardinals

    Sunday, September 27

    Twins @ Royals – 2:10 p.m. ET

    Nick Blackburn (11-11, 4.18) vs Zack Greinke (15-8, 2.08)

What’s this? A relevant Royals game? Well, the Twins are pushing for the AL Central crown but have to go through Cy Young frontrunner Zack Greinke. Nick Blackburn has allowed three or fewer runs in six of seven starts but he hasn’t beaten the Royals in three tries this season. Greinke hasn’t faced the Twins but should be fine considering he’s allow one run in his last five starts. That’s not a misprint. The Royals are good baseball picks on Sunday.

    Pick: Royals
