Sports Betting Odds: Patriots -7

The New England Patriots have been under a storm of criticism this week with most of it being directed at star wide receiver Randy Moss. Moss had a bad game against the Carolina Panthers last week and there has been no shortage of pundits, fans and players ready to pile on.

Last week, members of the Panthers defense took shots. This week, former receivers Cris Carter and Jerry Rice took their turn. The truth of the matter is that Moss might actually be hurt right now, which would explain some of the lazy play.

Nonetheless, Moss’ play probably won’t come in question this week as the Patriots face the Buffalo Bills. The Bills lead the NFL with 25 interceptions but they have the league’s worst run defense, so it’s very likely that the Patriots plan their attack via the ground game initially.

The Bills offense has been better with Ryan Fitzpatrick running the show but realistically, this is not one of the better units in the NFL. Fitzpatrick has just 186 total passing yards in his last two games combined. If the Patriots are at all on their game, they’ll win this contest fairly easily.

Oakland Raiders @ Denver Broncos

NFL Betting Line: Broncos -14

The Oakland Raiders will be without starting quarterback Bruce Gradkowski this week and they’ve opted for No. 3 quarterback, Charlie Frye instead of JaMarcus Russell as their starter.

Russell came into the game last week and played just over a two quarters worth of action and still found enough time to throw an interception, fumble and get sacked six times. While Frye may not be much of a better option than Russell, he also can’t be much worse.

The Broncos are the biggest favorite on the board this week and considering they are playing the Raiders, it’s easy to see why. The Raiders only path to victory is to have a really good effort on the ground from their stable of running backs but the Broncos defense won’t allow it – especially at home.

Look for Kyle Orton and company to play smart football and let the Raiders make mistakes. The Broncos will move the ball down the field, take the easy points and play defense.

Minnesota is still one of the top sports betting favorites in the NFC, but their confidence had to take a shot after being manhandled by Arizona on Sunday night. The Vikings will try to right the ship when they host Cincinnati this week.

The Bengals (9-3) beat Detroit 23-13 for their fourth win in five games, and they shut the Lions down after a 54-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Cincinnati held the Lions to 245 yards and two turnovers, and they proceeded to dominate the game on the ground, led by Cedric Benson’s 110 yards. Carson Palmer was 17-of-29 for 220 yards with a touchdown and two picks, while Chad Ochocinco caught nine passes for 137 yards and a score, which led to a fine by the NFL after Ochocinco put on a sombrero and poncho on the sidelines. The Vikings (10-2) were brought down to earth in a 30-17 loss in Arizona as Brett Favre went 30-of-45 for 275 yards and two touchdowns, but he was picked off twice, and the Cardinals sacked him twice as well. Adrian Peterson had his worst game as a pro with 19 yards on 13 carries, and the Vikings gave up 398 yards. This was easily Minnesota’s worst game of the year, and they were due after winning their last three games by an average of 22.3 points.

The Vikings are a 6.5-point NFL betting favorite at home this week, and their recent three-game winning streak came at the Metrodome, so they’ll be happy to get back home. However, the Bengals are a tough team that doesn’t mind playing in hostile environments. Cincinnati is 4-1 on the road, 3-2 ATS away from home. Also, they’re an amazing 6-0 as an underdog, and they seem to like having their backs against the wall. The Vikings should win, but the Bengals will keep it close.

Those who play NFL odds could be watching history this year as not one, but two teams are 11-0 heading into Week 13 action. One of those teams, Indianapolis, will host AFC South rival Tennessee, who have won five in a row and may be the hottest team in the league outside of Indy and New Orleans.

Titans vs Colts betting – Sunday, December 6, 1:00 PM ET

Vince Young carried the Titans (5-6) to a stirring 20-17 win over Arizona, leading a 99-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Kenny Britt with no time on the clock. Since Young was given the starter’s role over Kerry Collins, the Titans look like a brand new team. Now that teams have to account for Young, it’s made Chris Johnson even more dangerous as he’s averaged 160 yards on the ground since Young joined the starters.

The Colts (11-0) beat Houston for the second time in three weeks with a 35-27 win on the road, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. The defense had a big hand in that, forcing three turnovers, including a 27-yard interception return for a score. Peyton Manning was “held” to 244 yards and a pair of picks, but he did throw three touchdowns. The Colts even managed to get a running game going, rushing for 114 yards.

NFL odds in your online sportsbook has the Colts as a 6.5-point favorite at home, but that may be too many points to lay with Indy, even if you know that they’ve won five of their last six against the Titans at home. Both secondaries are banged up, which means it should go over the posted total in your sportsbook. The Titans can definitely keep it close with the Colts in Indy, and they need to control the clock with Young and Johnson’s running ability, which keeps Manning and the Indy offense on the sidelines (even though that didn’t work for Miami in Week 2, when the Dolphins held the ball for 45 minutes). The Colts have clinched the AFC South, so they could be due to a letdown, especially after so many close games.

Add in the fact Ben Wallace played 30 minutes in the last game and score zero points, and you have the makings of the wrong team favored. The Bucks can score, Jennings is a stud and they have some chemistry on offense, which is more than I can say for Detroit. With the backcourt of Bell and Jennings, that is the difference in this ballgame from a scoring standpoint.

The Houston Texans have to pick themselves up off the mat once again after yet another discouraging fourth quarter failure. On Monday Night Football, NFL betting fans saw Texans kicker Kris Brown miss his second consecutive fourth quarter game-tying field goal attempt, which led to another Texans loss.

This week, the task doesn’t get any easier for Houston as the undefeated Indianapolis Colts come to town. The Texans have a lot of trouble with their division rivals. Sports betting cappers should note that in 15 matchups between the franchises, the Texans have only won once.

When the Colts offense is on the field

One of the reasons why the Colts have dominated the Texans is because they have Peyton Manning and a group of stellar wide receivers, and the Texans have a weak secondary and virtually no pass rush.

Is there any reason to believe things will change?

The Colts still have Manning and he’s having an MVP-caliber season. Beyond that, they have a slew of wide receivers from Reggie Wayne to Pierre Garcon to tight end Dallas Clark that will continue to give the Texans a hard time. Even though the Colts are on the road, the elements won’t be a factor in this game and they should have no problems moving the ball up and down the field.

When the Texans offense is on the field

For the Texans, their offense can be prolific but it clearly stalls at times. If they want to be at full force, they are going to have to trust Steve Slaton and get him involved. If the Texans become a one-dimensional passing team against the Colts, the stellar Colts ends are going to pin their ears back and mow down the Texans.

If the Texans can run with Slaton, it will allow them to play keep away and keep the Colts potent offense on the sidelines.

Outlook & Pick

The Texans are still the Texans the Colts are still the Colts. Manning will continue to pick apart the Texans defense and the Texans will continue to play from behind.

The difference between these two teams is execution. While the Colts are the best in the business, the Texans – as evidenced by their continuous fourth quarter failures – are still a work in progress.

The Colts will stay perfect with another big win.

The NFL odds for Sunday’s clash between Seattle and Minnesota are predicting a big win for the Vikings, as the Seahawks is hurt on both sides of the ball, which means it will be tough to hang with Brett Favre and company this week.

Seahawks vs Vikings odds – Sunday, November 22, 1:00 PM ET

Seattle (3-6) had 472 yards of offense, but they still lost 31-20 at Arizona due to a couple of picks from Matt Hasselbeck, who was also 26-of-52 for 315 yards and a touchdown. Hasselbeck is dealing with broken ribs and a sore shoulder, and with Seattle’s NFL odds being as bad as they are in your sportsbook, they should just shut him down for the season. Justin Forsett was a nice surprise, running for 123 yards and a score in place of Julius Jones, who didn’t play much because of a chest injury.

The Vikings (8-1) made short work of Detroit in a 27-10 romp at home with 492 yards of offense, 340 through the air and 152 on the ground. Favre was 20-for-29 for 344 yards and a score, while Sidney Rice caught seven passes for 201 yards, his third 100-yard game in four outings. Adrian Peterson added the icing on the cake with 133 rushing yards and a touchdown for the Vikings, who added three sacks to their NFL-leading total. It’s easy to see why many have the Vikings in their NFL picks to go to the Super Bowl this year.

NFL odds in your sportsbook have the Vikings as an 11-point home favorite, while some have them at 10.5 points, and it’ll be one of the year’s biggest upsets if they lose to Seattle, who has split four meetings with Minnesota since 2002. Hasselbeck can’t afford to take many more hits, and he’ll be chased by the Vikings’ front four, particularly Jared Allen. The Vikings will also get Antonio Winfield, a Pro Bowl corner, back after he missed three games with a foot injury. Defensively, the Seahawks will have to pick their choice of death: Put eight in the box to stop Peterson, and the Favre/Rice duo goes to town. Watch the passing game, and Peterson runs all over them.

Nobody is going to confuse Saints-Rams with Pacquiao Cotto betting, but the Rams are definitely worth consideration to cover. New Orleans was given a similar edge last week against Carolina but failed to make up the necessary points. So is St. Louis a great underdog pick this week?

New Orleans Saints at St. Louis Rams

Sunday, Nov. 15 at 1:00 p.m. ET

NFL betting line: Saints -13.5

Stopping the run is a growing concern in New Orleans. The Saints are allowing 112 rushing yards per game and that number has been steadily rising over the past month. The team’s last three opponents are averaging 160 yards per game, plus seven touchdowns. Right now the Saints don’t appear to have any answers for a power running game.

That’s where the Rams come in. Steven Jackson is averaging nearly 100 yards per game this season and he’s been especially good the past two weeks, racking up 283 yards, a 6.2 average and a score. Of course, he’ll have to do it alone; St. Louis’ passing game is averaging just 171 yards per game in the air, plus an awful 56.4 completion percentage.

That gives the Saints offense a big edge. New Orleans is racking up 37 points per game, and it’s tough to slow the team down when it’s so balanced. The Saints can toss it with Drew Brees, who leads the NFL in touchdown passes, or grind it out with a trio of backs—Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell and Reggie Bush. New Orleans is fifth in rushing this season.

They’ll be attacking a Rams defense giving up 134 yards per game on the ground. Sportsbook bettors are well aware St. Louis is simply overmatched and it’s hard to believe going against New Orleans will be any different, especially with so many weapons to choose from.

The Panthers were able to cover a double-digit spread last week, but they have much more talent than St. Louis. After Jackson there’s a major drop and, while he’ll surely have some room to run against New Orleans, Brees and company will simply put up too many points to keep pace. Careful not to trust the home team too much here. Chicago’s O-line isn’t playing too well right now; it had a tough time protecting Jay Cutler against the Browns of all teams. The Cardinals are fresh off an embarrassing home loss to Carolina but are quietly 3-0 on the road this season. Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald can beat a suspect Bears secondary and the Cards overall will duplicate their Week 7 effort versus the Giants.

Carolina Panthers @ New Orleans Saints (-13)

Sunday, November 8, 1:00 p.m. ET

Usually we can trust the high-octane Saints to cover virtually every spread but I’m not totally sold on them this week. Sedrick Ellis’ injury left a big hole up the middle in New Orleans’ run defense last week and Michael Turner exploited it for the Falcons in the Monday nighter. Even if the Saints contain DeAngelo Williams, bullish Jonathan Stewart may gouge them up the middle. The Panthers shocked the Cardinals with a dominant win last week; maybe they’ll catch the Saints looking past them and at least cover the spread.

Sportsbook pick: Panthers +13

San Diego Chargers @ New York Giants (-4.5)

Sunday, November 8, 4:15 p.m. ET

It’s time for the Giants to win decisively lest we get seriously worried about them in online betting circles. New York looked as dominant as any team over the first few weeks but their defensive injuries, especially in the secondary, are taking their toll. The Chargers are a nice matchup for the Giants, however. They struggle mightily to stop the run, allowing 130-plus rushing yards per game, so New York should romp if it hands the ball to Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw 35-40 times.
